A record figure of nearly €4m has been raised for cancer research and care through this year's Daffodil Day.
The Irish Cancer Society has announced that Daffodil Day, which took place on Friday 23rd March, surpassed all expectations by raising a record €3.8m.
This is the largest amount that has been raised since Daffodil Day first began 20 years ago. All monies raised from Daffodil Day are channelled into the provision of free nationwide patient care services including hospital and community based nursing services for people with cancer and their families.
In 2007 more that 1,200 people across the country will be cared for at home with the assistance of an Irish Cancer Society funded night nurse. About €1.3m of this year's Daffodil Day funds will be used to fund the night nursing service for the forthcoming year.
Commenting on the success, Jill Clark, Head of Fundraising at the Irish Cancer Society said: "We are quite frankly overwhelmed by the incredible amount of money raised on Daffodil Day 2007 and on behalf of the Irish Cancer Society we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the people of Ireland for their generosity, and our much-valued volunteers for their tremendous efforts,” she said.
