Flat Soft Drinks No Good For Sick Children

Parents should not give their children flat fizzy drinks to rehydrate them following a bout of vomiting or diarrhoea, experts have warned.

It is widely believed that flat soft drinks such as cola or clear lemonade can help to replace fluids following a tummy bug. They are commonly given to children who may not like the taste of traditional rehydration solutions. However, researchers at Watford General Hospital in Hertfordshire, UK found little evidence to suggest that flat fizzy drinks are effective in preventing dehydration. Flat fizzy drinks do not contain the right balance of fluids and electrolytes to prevent dehydration and therefore cannot be recommended for this purpose, they said.

The research will be published in the journal, Archives of Disease in Childhood.
